Elisa M. Mazzaferro, MS, DVM, PhD, DACVECC

Dr. Mazzaferro was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, along with her twin brother, Joseph. She received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal and veterinary science from the University of Rhode Island, in 1991 and 1993, respectively. She then moved to Lansing, Michigan, where she received her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from Michigan State University in 1997. While in veterinary school, she was president of the Omega Tau Sigma Professional Veterinary Fraternity. After graduation, she moved to Milwaukee, Wisconsin and completed a one-year specialty internship in Emergency and Critical Care at the Veterinary Institute of Trauma, Emergency and Critical Care. From there, she moved to Colorado State University and completed a dual residency in Emergency and Critical Care and a PhD in Small Animal Clinical Sciences. She received her board certification into the American College of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care in November of 2002. In addition, she lectures throughout the country at national and international conferences and is on the Proceedings and Scientific Program committee for the Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Society. She is currently the Case Reports Editor for the Journal of Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care, and is the co-author of two textbooks: Kirk and Bistner’s Handbook of Veterinary Procedures and Emergency Treatment, 8th Edition (Elsevier) and Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Procedures (Blackwell Scientific). Her areas of interest include: nutritional support of the critically ill veterinary patient, trauma, pain management and acute care of the metabolically unstable diabetic patient.

Dr. Mazzaferro joined Wheat Ridge Veterinary Specialists in October 2002. She has a variety of cats and dogs, including three adorable pugs, Vincent Charles, Mikey, and Penelope. In her spare time, she enjoys cooking, gardening, growing orchids, teaching Jazzercise, and mentoring high school students in the Wheat Ridge Veterinary Explorers Program.
